A tornado struck the southern part of Ottawa on Thursday evening, causing damage to homes, properties, and trees in Riverside South and Findlay Creek.
The Canadian Ministry of the Environment confirmed that a tornado touched down 9 kilometers northwest of Metcalfe as severe weather moved through the Canadian capital region of Ottawa.
Storm follower Connor Moquit posted a video on social media of what he claimed was a tornado on Albion Road near Rideau Road at 6:47 PM.
Damage reports extended from the southern end of Bank Street to River Road near Earl Armstrong Road.
Images on social media showed damage to homes and fallen trees, as well as an overturned trailer at a construction site.
Albion Road was temporarily closed due to fallen wires and tree branches after 7 PM.
The councillor for the area on the city council, Steve Deroche, reported that there were eight homes said to be affected by the storm, with roof damage reported on Escapade Private, Salamander Way, Findley Creek Drive, and Labrador Crescent.
On Kelly Farm Drive on Thursday evening, roof shingles, street signs, and other debris were scattered on the street.
Deroche said, "that crews are assisting with covering roofs and checking on health in the area."
Lightning struck a home on Wilhelmina Place in the Riverside South area during the storm, causing part of the roof to be charred, according to Ottawa Fire Services.
Deroche stated that no reports of injuries had been received.
Ottawa Police reported that officers responded to four service calls related to the severe weather, with calls regarding roof damage and reports of fallen trees and downed power lines.
