On August 20, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated on the social media network X, formerly known as Twitter, that he had approved a request from the British Columbia government for additional support to combat a series of devastating wildfires.
Trudeau indicated that military personnel and other resources will be deployed to assist with evacuations and other logistical tasks.
In remarks to reporters earlier on Sunday, Trudeau described the wildfires as an extremely serious problem.
Additionally, tens of thousands of British Columbians have been forced to flee their homes, trying to come to terms with the loss of their houses, as the massive wildfires that remain out of control have destroyed more buildings and caused poor air quality throughout the province.
At a press conference on August 20, firefighters stated that the battle against the devastating wildfires that broke out in the Okanagan Lake area of Columbia had turned after days of ongoing destruction.
As of Sunday, August 20, the Shuswap regional district in British Columbia maintained all evacuation orders after wildfires merged in the Lower East Adams Lake area and Bush Creek East area into a large fire on Saturday.
The fires have destroyed the communities of Scotch Creek and Celista on the north shore of Shuswap Lake, a popular tourist destination located about 150 kilometers north of Kelowna.
Since Thursday, officials have confirmed the loss of homes and facilities in the Kelowna area and parts of Shuswap, but the full extent of the damage has not been accounted for, as the fires continue to blaze in the province's dry forests, exacerbated by winds and rising temperatures.
