The federal government has signed a new deal with GlaxoSmithKline for flu vaccines.
Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos announced the contract today in Quebec City, a four-year agreement to produce and deliver domestic pandemic flu vaccines with five one-year follow-up options.
Canada has had a deal with GlaxoSmithKline for flu vaccines since 2001.
Duclos says the deal includes an option to purchase 80 million doses of flu vaccine in the event of a pandemic and at least four million doses annually for use in publicly funded vaccination programs.
Historically, flu pandemics have occurred every 11 to 40 years, with the last being the H1N1 pandemic in 2009. The first flu vaccine delivery for 2022 is scheduled for September and October.
