A well-informed source said that a court in Myanmar, which is ruled by the military, issued on Wednesday a three-year prison sentence against the ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi on charges of accepting bribes.
The 77-year-old Nobel laureate, who has led the opposition against her country's military rule for decades, faces at least 18 crimes ranging from illicit gains to electoral fraud, with a total sentence nearing 190 years.
Suu Kyi described the charges against her as ridiculous and denied any wrongdoing. She is currently held in solitary confinement in the capital Naypyidaw, and her trials have been conducted in closed sessions.
The source, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the case, said the latest charges relate to allegations that Suu Kyi accepted bribes from a businessman.
Suu Kyi was sentenced to three years in prison on two charges, with the sentences to be served concurrently.
Opponents of the military say the charges against her aim to prevent her from returning to political life or attempting to challenge the military's grip on power since last year's coup.
A spokesperson for the military council did not respond to calls requesting comment on Wednesday. The military council insists that the judiciary is independent and that detainees receive due legal procedures.
