More than 15,000 customers are still without electricity in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island nearly two weeks after Fiona storm made landfall in the region on September 23. As of 10 AM Thursday, Nova Scotia Power reported 1,528 active outages affecting 6,580 customers, with most outages in Cape Breton and Pictou County. According to the latest outage map, power is estimated to be restored to all Nova Scotia residents by Sunday. In an update on Twitter Thursday morning, the company said more than 900 crew members are working on restoration efforts in northeastern Nova Scotia and additional crews will be deployed to the area later in the day. Also, ongoing restoration efforts and outages have prompted the Nova Scotia government to declare a state of emergency in nine counties in the northern region on Wednesday.
In Prince Edward Island, 9,231 Maritime Electric customers were still without electricity as of Thursday morning and five schools remain closed on the island so far. In a tweet on Wednesday, the city of Charlottetown urged residents to stay away from areas around closed schools where electrical crews are working.
