The striking "Metro" workers in the Greater Toronto Area have now announced a sit-in at two grocery distribution warehouses, a move the company says is preventing the delivery of fresh products to stores across the province.

Local president 414 Gord Curry and national president Lana Payne met with the workers engaged in a secondary sit-in at a warehouse in the west end of Toronto.

More than 3,700 workers at 27 Metro stores across the Greater Toronto Area have been on strike since July 29 after rejecting the preliminary agreement recommended by their bargaining committee.

Metro spokesperson Marie-Claude Bécan urged the workers to return to the table, stating that the warehouses supply all Metro stores and FreshCo in Ontario, and that the sit-ins are preventing the delivery of fresh products to all of its stores.

Unifor stated that workers are demanding a fair share of the company’s increasing profits, with many workers calling for the reinstatement of the $2 per hour pandemic "hero pay."

Metro claims that the preliminary agreement rejected by the workers includes paid sick days for part-time employees, improvements in benefits and pensions, and significant wage increases.
