McGill University, a well-known Canadian university, informed all teachers and students on Thursday (November 16) that from now on, the WeChat application must not be installed or used on electronic devices owned and managed by the school, and those that have been installed will be uninstalled immediately. Additionally, no matters related to McGill are allowed to be handled using WeChat.

The school does not have authority over the personal mobile phones of teachers and students. However, McGill IT Services, which issued the notice, strongly advises that if you need to use personal mobile devices to access school data (such as McGill email), do not install TikTok and WeChat applications on those devices.

The notice also mentions that McGill University has banned installing and using TikTok on personal mobile devices such as mobile phones and tablets provided by the school or the paid service since March of this year. Those already installed must be uninstalled immediately.

The notice stated that this decision was made based on relevant guidelines issued by the Quebec provincial government earlier this month. Previously, the federal government banned the use of TikTok and WeChat on its electronic devices.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded after the Canadian government announced the ban, expressing strong opposition to Canada's misuse of state authority to suppress Chinese companies.

The Chinese government also prohibits local internet users from using search engines and social media such as Google, X (formerly Twitter), and Facebook, whether on public electronic devices or private mobile phones.
