A number of dead and injured fell on the morning of Monday, October 10, 2022, as a result of the massive explosions that struck the Ukrainian capital Kiev and other areas in the country.

The shelling comes ahead of an expected meeting of the Russian National Security Council led by President Vladimir Putin to study the response to the Kerch bridge explosion that occurred on Saturday, with Moscow accusing Kiev of involvement in orchestrating it.

A spokesman for the Ukrainian emergency service said in press statements that dead and injured fell as a result of the shelling on Kiev.

Videos published by Reuters showed at least one corpse lying in the middle of a street that was shelled in Kiev, while firefighters were trying to extinguish fires nearby.

The shelling also hit Volodymyrska Street not far from the office of President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to a Ukrainian official.

The Russian shelling was not limited to the capital Kiev but also affected other areas in the country, according to the Ukrainian presidency. Zelensky said: "Dead and injured fell in shelling that affected several Ukrainian cities."

Sputnik quoted Ukrainian media as saying there were "explosions in Dnipropetrovsk in central Ukraine, Zhytomyr, Ternopil, Khmelnytsky, and Lviv in the west of the country."

Reports had spoken of several explosions earlier on Monday in the center of the Ukrainian capital targeting buildings from which columns of smoke rose.

The mayor of Kiev, Vitali Klitschko, said several explosions occurred in the city center this morning, according to Reuters.

Videos recorded rising columns of smoke from buildings in the city center.
