The owner of Bab Sang restaurant in Quebec City has only been in the city for a few months, but he may soon pack his bags and leave, as he told Noovo Info on Thursday, speaking from his restaurant on Maguire Avenue: "I am now seriously planning to move my business to Montreal or Ottawa." The Korean restaurant was the subject of backlash earlier this week after an article in Le Soleil revealed its lack of French language service. According to the report, the restaurant servers do not speak French, and the dish names on the menu are only in English. The owner of Bab Sang said he received phone threats since the article was published. For this reason, he requested to keep his name confidential. Adding: "Most residents of Quebec City are really kind and nice people, but some people do not like me." He decided to close the dining room of the restaurant out of fear of harassment, stating that he needs to protect his employees. The Quebec language charter requires that all consumers, including restaurant patrons, have the right to receive information and service in French. Also, the restaurant owner plans to reopen once French-speaking staff are hired, but the process has not been easy because labor shortages have made finding workers a challenge. In the same context, Bruno Salvail, director of the business development organization SDC Maguire, told Noovo Info that he feels sympathy for the owner and his situation. Salvail said: "He told me everything he did to hire French-speaking employees, but it doesn't work," pointing out that all Bab Sang workers are family members, as the owner of Bab Sang is not a native English speaker; he picked up English when he lived in Australia before moving to New Brunswick for a few years. Now, having arrived in Quebec, he planned to do the same but with the French language. He said: "I really love Quebec City, so I decided to come here, even though I cannot speak French, but actually, I can learn the language." The owner expressed his desire to integrate into the Quebec City community and that he did not come to Quebec to break their culture. However, now, because of the violent backlash, he may not stay long enough to learn French, a fact that makes Salvail feel frustrated.
