Immigration Minister Mark Miller said that Ottawa will require foreign applicants to study in Canada to have double the amount of money currently required.
Miller also said that the change is one of many introduced by the government aimed at ensuring that international students are not left vulnerable to unstable employers and unable to afford the cost of living in Canada.
He also warned the provinces that the Liberals might limit visas if colleges and universities do not sufficiently support students, but he told reporters that governments need to have more discussions before implementing these changes.
Immigration Minister Mark Miller also announced new upcoming rules for prospective international students that increase the amount of money needed to study in Canada.
Miller likened some colleges to small factories, saying they provide foreigners with inadequate education while giving them an opportunity to obtain work visas in Canada and eventually immigrate.
The Liberals are also working on intensifying the policy that extends the period that international graduates can work in Canada without a work visa.
Miller said Canada will consider offering some kind of support for foreigners unable to study in Canada due to the new income requirements.
