South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced today, Saturday, that Mangosuthu Buthelezi, a veteran South African politician and founder of the Inkatha Freedom Party, has passed away at the age of 95.
Ramaphosa wrote on the social media platform "X": "He passed away early this Saturday morning, Prince Buthelezi, who served as the Minister of Home Affairs in the democratic South Africa."
Buthelezi had been in the hospital since August, receiving routine treatment.
The well-known yet controversial politician founded the party in 1975, during the apartheid regime. He led the party, which contested the country's first democratic elections in 1994, until 2019 when he stepped down from his position.
