Cyber attack on Regina schools

Cybersecurity attacks happen every day, and as the Regina Public Schools department discovered this week, no one is safe.

After being hacked on May 22, 2022, the board issued a statement on Twitter, saying in part: "As a result of this attack, the school department stopped its systems to assess the nature and extent of the attack and to ensure the safe restoration of the school department's systems to the internet.

When the school department noticed suspicious activity on its systems, it took immediate action, stopping and securing all affected systems to mitigate any impact on data and operations."

The Ministry of Education added in a statement: "The Government of Saskatchewan is aware that Regina Public Schools were attacked.

We understand that the department is taking appropriate steps to safely restore the IT system online with the support of cybersecurity specialists, and will investigate the attack properly."

This is not the first cyberattack the province has faced in a major sector over the past two years. Both the health sector and SLGA were targeted.

It added that "Saskatchewan's economic future will depend on how defenses are strengthened and investments are made strategically so that we do not face bad actors who continue to do this."

At that time, the Regina Public Schools department could not confirm the depth of the breach or the information that was leaked. A Twitter message says they will continue to communicate with citizens via Facebook and Twitter, while email and school portals will remain offline.

Parents are asked to contact schools regarding any student service needs.
