Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland is in Kitchener today to discuss the challenges and opportunities currently facing the Canadian technology sector.

Freeland stopped in the Waterloo area for a tour of Communitech and to meet local innovators and entrepreneurs.

Freeland said: "This area, the Waterloo-Toronto corridor, is one of the best tech ecosystems in the world.

There are more tech workers here in this corridor than in Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Washington D.C.

"Something we should all be proud of as Canadians, the technology workforce in Canada is growing faster than any hub in the United States.

We are already at the top, and I want the people working in this sector to know that our government is very proud of that. We understand how important this is for Canada today and our future, and we are committed to continuing to work until we reach number one."

The hope lies in meeting senior technology executives to discuss the challenges and opportunities in the Canadian technology sector.

Freeland was joined by several local MPs, and they started a tour. Freeland said: "Seeing the work being done here, and talking to people, made me excited again about today's reality and the future of Canadian technology."

"The Waterloo region is a famous center for technology and innovation, as Chris noted, it has the second highest density of startups in the world."

Chris Albinson, CEO of Communitech, said, "We have all these great companies, and it is really wonderful to have the Deputy Prime Minister here today to celebrate this success but also to work with us for what’s next."

Later this afternoon, Freeland will host a roundtable to discuss ways to help the industry get back on track.
