Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Facebook on Monday of prioritizing its profits over the safety of individuals during emergency situations resulting from the record wildfire season in Canada.
Trudeau said at a press conference in Cornwall, Prince Edward Island, "Right now, in an emergency where up-to-date local information is more important than ever, Facebook is putting the company's profits before the safety of individuals."
He added, "It is unreasonable for a company like Facebook to choose to prioritize its profits over ensuring that local news organizations provide updated information to Canadians."
Earlier this summer, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced that it would fulfill its promise to block news content from Canada on its platforms due to a new Canadian law requiring tech giants to pay publishers for linking to or otherwise repurposing their content online.
The raging wildfires in Canada have displaced tens of thousands of individuals from their homes and threatened cities like Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories, while around 30,000 people have been under evacuation orders in British Columbia.
