British Columbia: 6 new regions proposed by the Electoral Commission

The Electoral Commission in British Columbia has issued a preliminary report recommending the creation of six new electoral districts, which will raise the total number of seats in the Legislative Assembly to 93.

The commission says the proposed redistributions will be in "rapidly growing population areas," specifically Vancouver, Burnaby, Langley, Surrey, and Kelowna, along with Langford on Vancouver Island.

A statement from Judge Nitya Eyer, chair of the commission, says the recommendation is a response to the growth of British Columbia's population by more than 300,000 people over the past five years.

Eyer says commission members traveled throughout the province to gather input on the elections, held 50 public sessions in 43 communities, and received more than 1,300 submissions.

The report also recommends adjustments to 71 electoral districts based on geographic, demographic, and other considerations.

The final round of public consultations is currently underway and is scheduled to end on November 22, with the commission saying it will consider modifying its recommendations based on public input before issuing its final report next April.

The Legislative Assembly will then decide whether to accept all, some, or none of the commission's recommendations.
