Inhaling or smelling hot pepper can cause many illnesses for some children and individuals due to a certain allergy that person has. As a result, a Brazilian young woman named Thais Medeiros went into a coma for several days after smelling hot pepper while preparing food with her friend.
As soon as Medeiros inhaled the scent of the pepper, she began to feel an itch in her throat, leading to her ending up in the hospital where doctors diagnosed her with "cerebral edema" caused by fluid accumulation in the brain.
Medeiros remained in a coma for several days after smelling the pepper.
Ms. Medeiros is slowly recovering, but it is unclear whether she will suffer from permanent neurological issues due to the edema.
There are no official data on the number of cases of "cerebral edema" that occur each year.
