Parks Canada said that a bear attack in Banff National Park in Alberta resulted in the deaths of two people.
Nathalie Fay, the external relations manager for the Banff field unit, also said that the agency received an alert from a GPS device originating from the Red Deer River valley around 8 PM on Friday indicating a bear attack.
In a statement, Fay said that a trained response team for bear attacks was immediately deployed, but the weather conditions at the time did not permit the use of helicopters, forcing the team to travel to the site by road overnight.
She also added that the human-wildlife conflict response team arrived at 1 AM and found two deceased individuals.
Fay continued that the response team encountered a grizzly bear displaying aggressive behavior in the area, which led Parks Canada staff to euthanize it for public safety.
She also said that police arrived at 5 AM to transport the victims to Sundre, Alta, and the area of the attack remains closed as a precautionary safety measure.
