As of Tuesday, the six immunization clinics operated by the city in Toronto will provide free flu vaccines to the general public. Those wishing to get a flu vaccine are also required to make an appointment through the TPH booking system, where appointments for Toronto residents opened on October 26. So far, 4000 spots are available, but more will be added weekly throughout the month. Also, ID or health card will not be required. Additionally, anyone aged five years or older will be offered the COVID-19 vaccine and the flu vaccine at their appointment. Residents of Toronto aged six months and over can get the flu vaccine through their primary care provider starting this month. Those aged two years and older are eligible to receive it at one of more than 700 participating pharmacies.
On October 14, Toronto Public Health launched its annual flu vaccination campaign, where people in higher-risk places such as retirement homes as well as those experiencing homelessness were among the first to receive the vaccine. In addition, typical flu symptoms, which can be similar to COVID-19 and other respiratory infections, include the sudden onset of high fever, chills, sore throat, cough, and muscle aches, with recovery from the flu usually taking seven to ten days.
In this regard, those most at risk for severe effects of the virus are adults aged 65 and over, individuals with chronic health conditions, people with neurological or neurodevelopmental conditions, residents in long-term care homes and chronic care facilities, children aged six months to five years, pregnant individuals, and Indigenous peoples. People should also frequently clean their hands, avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth with unclean hands, cover their coughs and sneezes, in addition to wearing a mask in indoor public places or crowded locations to prevent the spread of the virus.
