The battle against the fires continues on both sides of Okanagan Lake after the British Columbia government imposed travel restrictions to free up space for the thousands of people evacuated who were forced to leave their homes.

More than 30,000 people are under evacuation orders in the West Kelowna area, and while firefighters said that the recent calmer and cooler conditions have helped with extinguishing the fires, they expect tough days ahead.

About 200 firefighters, including representatives from departments across the province, are battling the devastating McDougall Creek wildfire, which has reached an area of 105 square kilometers.

On Saturday, the province imposed travel restrictions for the purpose of staying in temporary accommodations like hotels and camps in many communities in the Okanagan.

Emergency Management Minister Bowinn Ma stated that these accommodations are no longer available for anything other than essential travel, so rooms can be made available for firefighters and evacuees.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier David Eby discussed the wildfire situation on Saturday, and Trudeau's office stated that the Prime Minister promised to provide all necessary assistance from the federal government.
