Roger Federer, who is considered by many as the greatest tennis player who has elevated the sport to great and prestigious levels during a career spanning more than two decades, will retire after the Laver Cup next week in London.

The 41-year-old player, who won 20 Grand Slam singles titles and redefined the sport with his technical brilliance, has broken records.

A knee injury has kept him from playing since his loss at Wimbledon last year, although many still hope for one final golden farewell.

Federer said in an 845-word statement published on social media: "As many of you know, I have faced challenges over the past three years in the form of injuries and surgeries."

"I have worked hard to return to full competitive form. But I also know my body's capabilities and limits, and the message to me recently was clear. I am 41 years old. I have played over 1500 matches over 24 years.

Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever dreamed of, and now I must recognize the right time to end my competitive career.

The Laver Cup next week in London will be my last event in the Professional Tennis Players Association.
