A Moroccan restaurant in Mississauga announced that it will donate its weekend profits to help the victims of the powerful earthquake that hit Morocco, resulting in the deaths of over 2000 people.
Mona Ahmad, owner of the Moroccan Kitchen restaurant, said in an interview with CP24 on Saturday, "The amount will go directly to the people who have no homes and are without water and electricity."
Ahmad stayed awake all night, scared and worried about her family in the North African country. After learning of the earthquake that registered a magnitude of 6.8 late Friday evening, she immediately called her sister. Ahmad recalls, saying, "She wasn't answering. So I started to panic; I didn't know what to do, I am far away, what should I do? So I was just trying to call."
Ahmad added that she was later able to reach her sister through neighbors, and when they spoke, her sister recounted how the walls began to shake while she was sitting on her couch, "I tried to flee, but the door wouldn't open, she said, that's it, I'm dead."
Fortunately, the door was locked, and her sister was able to exit the house.
Ahmad shared what her sister saw, saying, "Everyone was crying, and everyone was hugging everyone, and praying, they stayed outside all night."
As of today, the death toll from the earthquake has risen to about 2000 people. Most of the fatalities were in Marrakech and five nearby provinces close to the earthquake's epicenter. Another 1832 individuals were injured, 1220 of whom are in serious condition, according to the country's officials.
