China announced today, Friday, August 5, 2022, the suspension of cooperation with the United States in a number of fields, prompting the latter to respond.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced the suspension of military and security talks with Washington, as well as the cancellation of climate talks.
It also announced the suspension of cooperation with the United States regarding drug control and illegal immigration.
Beijing also suspended cooperation with America regarding the maritime safety mechanism.
In response, the U.S. National Security Council announced that China cannot prevent Washington from operating in the seas and airspace.
It also said: "We are ready to respond to any Chinese escalation."
It is noted that Nancy Pelosi's visit to the island of Taiwan, claimed by China, lasted less than 24 hours, but it sparked Beijing's anger.
Beijing considers Pelosi's initiative, the highest-ranking elected American official to visit Taipei in 25 years, a provocation and a retreat from the promises made by the United States to China.
For her part, Pelosi firmly affirmed that the United States will not abandon the island, which lives under constant threat from the Chinese army.
The U.S. administration also confirmed to Beijing its commitment to the "One China" policy and distanced itself from Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, saying that the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives makes her own decisions.
It is noted that Pelosi's visit is the first visit by the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives to Taiwan since 1997, making her the highest-ranking American official to visit the island in 25 years.
