Quebec plans to raise tuition fees for students from other Canadian provinces. Premier François Legault stated that there is currently an imbalance in tuition fees between Quebec and other provinces, and the provincial government will issue an official announcement on this matter soon.

Legault also mentioned that it is unusual for a student from Montreal to pay four times the tuition fee to attend university in Toronto compared to what it costs a Toronto student to come to Quebec.

Higher education in Canada falls under the jurisdiction of provincial governments, so tuition fees for colleges and universities are determined by the province in which they are located.

Tuitions in Quebec are the lowest in Canada, but the amount paid by local students, students from other provinces, and international students varies significantly.

Taking the undergraduate program at McGill University in Montreal as an example, the annual tuition fees and miscellaneous fees for students from this province range from CAD 5,575 to CAD 7,487, while for students from other provinces, it ranges from CAD 11,138 to CAD 13,050, and for international students, they need to pay over CAD 56,000.

According to a report submitted to the Quebec Ministry of Higher Education by a relevant advisory committee, increases in tuition fees will have little impact on school enrollment but will have a more pronounced effect on students from low-income backgrounds, which is a group that already represents a small percentage of students.
