Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in Halifax today to announce a relief package for Atlantic Canada following post-tropical storm Fiona.
Ten days after Fiona blew through Nova Scotia, thousands of Nova Scotia Power residents are still waiting for electricity, and some have no idea when it will return.
Tim Houston, Premier of Nova Scotia, says more than 20,000 Nova Scotia residents remain without power in his province and many will not get power until the end of the week. He says having additional forces for things like traffic control can free up electrical workers and restore power faster.
Ottawa has provided half of the required forces following Hurricane Fiona, says the Premier in Eastern PEI, the post-Fiona era means waiting, wondering, and helping. In total, 850 soldiers have been deployed in Nova Scotia, PEI, Newfoundland and Labrador, according to a spokesperson for Defense Minister Anita Anand's office.
The spokesperson said in a statement, "We will continue to deploy the appropriate number of personnel to accomplish the tasks... and we will remain there as long as it takes to accomplish these critical tasks." Edited by: Yasra Bamtarf
