China's permanent representative to the United Nations, Zhang Jun, announced that the United States' stance on the conflict in the Gaza Strip "has made the whole world aware of double standards and hypocrisy."

Zhang said, "Turning a blind eye to the ongoing fighting while calling to prevent escalation of the conflict is self-deception, and ignoring the ongoing fighting while referring to the protection of women, children, and human rights is extremely ridiculous, all of this shows us the extent of double standards."

He also added: "We are very disappointed with the United States' use of the veto against the draft resolution," according to the Russian news agency "TASS," Saturday, December 9, 2023.

America’s opposition and Britain's abstention

This came after the United States, on Friday, used its veto power against a Security Council draft resolution calling for an "immediate humanitarian ceasefire" in Gaza.

Thirteen of the 15 Security Council member states voted in favor of the draft resolution, while the United States opposed it and the United Kingdom abstained from voting on the text presented by the United Arab Emirates.

The draft resolution also received support from about 100 countries and highlighted the "catastrophic situation in the Gaza Strip," calling for an "immediate ceasefire for humanitarian reasons." The brief text also called for the protection of civilians, the "immediate and unconditional" release of all hostages, and "guaranteeing the delivery of humanitarian aid."
