The U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) confirmed that the American destroyer "USS Carney" intercepted 3 missiles as well as several drones launched by Houthi fighters in Yemen.
Department spokesperson Pat Ryder said at a press conference: "This action served as evidence of the integrated air and missile defense architecture we have built in the Middle East, which we are prepared to use whenever necessary to protect our partners and our interests in this important region."
He also added: "There were no casualties among U.S. forces, nor are we aware of any civilian casualties on the ground."
He continued that the Department of Defense "cannot say for certain at this stage what the missiles and drones were targeting," but he stated, "They were launched from Yemen and were heading north along the Red Sea, potentially towards targets" in the occupied Palestinian territories.
It is worth noting that the American destroyer "USS Carney" transited the Suez Canal into the Red Sea on Wednesday. The U.S. Fleet Forces Command stated in a post on social media that it "will help ensure maritime security and stability in the Middle East."
