The Minister of Public Safety for the province of British Columbia confirmed that an officer of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police died after being stabbed in Burnaby. Mike Farnworth told reporters at the legislature on Tuesday afternoon that he had been notified of the death, and that the victim was an on-duty officer. "This is certainly a tragic and horrific situation," Farnworth said with a trembling voice, adding, "This is the worst news anyone wants to hear." Also, a regulatory authority said that Vancouver is witnessing a sharp rise in serious and fatal incidents involving the police, and likewise, the police union stated that the officer's death has left the policing profession shaken. At around 11:20 a.m., dozens of first responders from several police agencies arrived at a park in the city, where the police tape still surrounds Broadview Park near Canada Way and Gilmore Street, where the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Emergency Response Team was at the scene, joined by officers from the Vancouver and New Westminster police departments. In the same regard, sources told CTV News that one of the suspects was also killed at the scene. The investigation is still ongoing, so the identities of the criminal, the victim, or even the motive have not yet been announced. The provincial police monitor and the independent investigation office were also called for further inquiry into the case.
