Workers at Metro Company from 27 stores in the Greater Toronto Area voted this afternoon on a second preliminary deal, which, if ratified, will end a strike that has lasted more than a month.
The Montreal-based grocery company and the Unifor bargaining committee reached an agreement on Wednesday, which came a day after Metro obtained a temporary court order restricting secondary picket lines that were blocking the delivery of fresh products to its stores.
Over 3,700 workers had been on strike since July 29 after rejecting the first preliminary agreement recommended by the negotiating committee.
The workers are demanding the return of "hero pay" they received during the pandemic, along with improved working conditions and more full-time jobs.
On Wednesday, Gord Currie, president of Unifor Local 414, stated that the new preliminary deal acknowledges the economic struggles of the workers.
