The Toronto-based food bank confirmed that Metro stores are donating perishable food items to its organization as nearly 30 locations remain closed while workers continue to strike.

Neil Heatherington, the CEO of the Daily Bread Food Bank, stated that drivers are picking up shipments of perishable goods on Tuesdays from about twenty locations of Metro stores, among the 27 stores currently closed in the Toronto area.

Heatherington added this Tuesday morning, "When you think about all the fresh food and meat that will spoil, we want to make sure that doesn't happen and that it reaches the individuals suffering from hunger in our city, and that number continues to rise."

Metro confirmed that food scheduled to spoil during the labor dispute has been moved to other store locations, with remaining supplies directed to food banks, including Daily Bread.

Thousands of Metro employees officially resigned from their jobs on Saturday after rejecting a collective bargaining agreement reached the previous week.

Heatherington stated that the extra food load from the grocery chain, especially chicken products and meats with looming expiration dates, will be directed to a large off-site freezer at Daily Bread.

He added, "We will ensure that it is, that the food chain is appropriate, that it is safe, and we will freeze that and get it out to the people in the right place."

In addition to the management team at Metro, Heatherington expressed gratitude to the striking workers who allowed trucks to pass through the picket line and reach people across the city as soon as possible.

The Daily Bread Food Bank supports 200 food banks, from Scarborough to Etobicoke, which serve at least 270,000 people.
