Canada commits to providing $500 million to the Ukrainian army as part of efforts to isolate Russia from the world.
Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly also announced the funding today at the G20 Leaders' Summit in Indonesia, where some countries say they want to maintain good relations with Russia.
The commitment means that the Ukrainian armed forces will receive surveillance and communications equipment, as well as fuel and medical supplies.
Also, the half a billion dollar pledge adds to the same amount announced by the federal Liberal government in its budget last spring. Joly did not mention when the funding will flow.
In the same vein, Canada announced new sanctions on 23 Russians whom Joly says violated the human rights of opposition leaders.
