The authorities in Kazakhstan announced on Saturday, October 28, 2023, that at least 21 people were killed due to a fire that broke out in a mine owned by the giant mining company ArcelorMittal in the central part of the country.
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev immediately announced after the incident the "termination of cooperation" with the giant group. Meanwhile, local authorities clarified that a fire broke out in the Kostenko mine, resulting in the deaths of 21 people, and 18 others were hospitalized after suffering varying degrees of injuries.
The local unit of ArcelorMittal, based in Luxembourg, added that 205 people were evacuated out of 252 who were in the Kostenko mine and that 31 others were still unaccounted for.
