Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno announced today, Monday, November 20, 2023, that the cargo ship hijacked in the Red Sea yesterday, Sunday, is operated by the Japanese shipping and logistics company NYK (Nippon Yusen Kaisha Line).
Matsuno confirmed that the government received reports that the Houthi rebels in Yemen seized a car carrier registered in Yemen called "Galaxy Leader" while it was heading south off the coast of Yemen in the Red Sea.
Matsuno also added that Japan "strongly condemns such an act," adding that there were no Japanese citizens on board the ship.
Japan has requested Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Iran to urge the Houthis to release the ship and its crew as soon as possible.
Matsuno said that the government "will take necessary measures in cooperation with the concerned countries, taking into account the development of the situation."
The Houthi group in Yemen announced yesterday, Sunday, November 19, 2023, their control over a ship partially owned by a Zionist company.
On its part, the occupying entity announced that the hijacked ship is not Israeli and left Turkey en route to India with an international civilian crew.
