The union representing GO Transit workers on strike said negotiations with the employer will resume on Thursday, a day earlier than expected, after accusing the transit agency of disrupting talks. The strike, which began on Monday, led to the cancellation of regional bus service, causing headaches for passengers.
The Integrated Transportation Union also said that Metrolinx, which operates GO Transit, first contacted them on Tuesday with an offer to meet between the two sides on Friday to resume negotiations. This prompted the union to accuse Metrolinx of delay tactics before the transit agency agreed to postpone talks by one day.
Rob Cormier, president of ATU Local 1587, said in an interview on Wednesday: "I hope they have listened to our demands and made the right changes to present a contract that satisfies everyone."
The meeting also marks the twenty-first bargaining session since the two sides began talks over a new contract in April. The union said about 2,200 workers, including bus drivers and station officials, will continue to strike until a tentative agreement is reached.
Thousands of bus passengers, whose commuting and travel plans have been disrupted by the strike, have welcomed the return to negotiations.
