Ontario Premier Doug Ford is exploiting the fact that Justin Trudeau's government has suspended the carbon tax on oil used for residential heating to also request an exemption for Ontario residents who use natural gas for heating.
Ford wrote a letter on this subject to the head of the federal Liberal caucus in Ontario, James Maloney, stating that for him, it is a matter of fairness for Ontarians, emphasizing that 97.5% of households in the province do not use heating oil.
These families also deserve relief.
Ford also pointed out that nearly half of the Liberal caucus in Ottawa consists of MPs from Ontario. "It’s time to join your Atlantic colleagues and push [the government] on behalf of the families you represent," Ontario's premier wrote to Mr. Maloney.
Ford has also long opposed the federal carbon tax. To show his opposition, he placed stickers on gas pumps and even took the federal government to the Supreme Court, without success.
So far, the Trudeau government has excluded any other exemption from the carbon tax.
