Data from Statistics Canada showed an increase in homicides in 2021 and that nearly a quarter of the homicides were gang-related.

The agency also added that there were 788 homicides in the country last year - a three percent increase from 2020 - and 184 of these crimes were gang-related. This represents the highest rate of gang-related homicides since 2005.

The agency also said that firearms were the most commonly used weapons in homicides.

As for the rate of sexual assault in 2021, it was the highest since 1996, rising alongside the rate of domestic violence.

In the same context, Saskatchewan recorded the highest homicide rate, with a nine percent increase from 2020.

The rate of victims among Indigenous peoples across the country remained disproportionately high, six times higher than non-Indigenous peoples.

Black and South Asian people had higher rates of being victims of violent homicides.
