Three light earthquakes shook a seismically active area off the coast of British Columbia today, Sunday, without causing any damage or triggering tsunami activity.

The Canadian earthquake agency reported that a 4.0 magnitude earthquake was recorded around 8:20 AM local time. The epicenter of the earthquake was 185 kilometers west of Port Hardy, north of Vancouver Island.

This followed a 5.5 magnitude earthquake recorded at 4:30 AM and another 4.2 magnitude earthquake recorded about an hour and a half earlier near the same location.

The agency also stated that it is currently monitoring a series of earthquakes off the northern coast of Vancouver Island. More than 30 earthquakes have occurred since September 14, though none were felt, with the largest being the 5.5 magnitude quake on Sunday.

Andrew Schafer, a seismologist at Natural Resources Canada, noted that seismic activity in that area is "perfectly normal."

He explained that the earthquakes occurred in an area called the Queen Charlotte Triple Junction, where three tectonic plates meet.

Schafer added in an interview on Sunday, "As a result, we have a fair amount of earthquakes in this area." "Sometimes they come in swarms, and sometimes it's just kind of the ongoing background natural earthquakes."

Schafer also stated that it is not possible to predict whether more will occur.

"It’s not a weather function or time of year; sometimes the swarm just happens. Other than that, it is very normal to see a magnitude of 3.0 at least once a month in that area, and sometimes we get these bursts of activity."

Schafer confirmed that there have been no reports of damage from the earthquakes on Sunday and no tsunami is expected.

"For us on the west coast, (the earthquakes) are just another reminder that we live in an active seismic area, and let’s be prepared."

He suggested that people ensure they have an "earthquake preparedness kit" on hand and formalize their family emergency plan to be ready in case of a natural disaster.
