Calgary Police Chief, Mark Neufeld, announced on Tuesday a two-week halt to the enforcement of a Calgary Police Commission order for his officers to stop wearing the "thin blue line" patches on their uniforms while on duty.
Neufeld said members are "angry" about the order which called for the patches to be removed by April 1st and replaced with a symbol that "better reflects the values of Calgary residents."
Neufeld told reporters, "Any time you feel something like this is being imposed on you, a defensive reaction is not a surprising response, especially on topics that fit perfectly with your values and are at the heart of your identity." The commission had earlier said the decision to ban the symbol was made for several reasons, including its controversial history of "division, colonization, and racism," while acknowledging that some officers wear the patch "in honor of the fallen."
