As consumer prices continue to rise for months, nearly one in three Canadians intends to reduce their spending on Christmas gifts this year, according to a new survey conducted by Ipsos.

However, almost the same number intends to spend an amount on gifts similar to what they spent last year.

Additionally, 9% of respondents said they do not want to buy gifts, while about 20% said they have not yet thought about how much they will spend on them.

The survey was conducted on behalf of the charitable organization CanadaHelps / CanaDon, which works to connect donors with charities that support causes they care about.

The survey also showed that about half of Canadians prefer to receive a gift that can support a charity rather than receiving a physical gift.

The survey also showed that 22% of Canadians expect to turn to a charity for essential services in the next six months. But 20% of respondents said they want to reduce their donations compared to last year. One of the main reasons for this, according to them, is the rising cost of living.

To encourage people to give according to their means, CanadaHelps / CanaDon invites the public to participate in the "GivingTuesday / Mardi je donne" event, which follows "Black Friday," or "Vendredi fou" in French, and "Cyber Monday." Black Friday marks the start of the year-end holiday gift shopping season, where most stores offer deals and discounts, while Cyber Monday is to encourage people to shop online.

In the same context, the association suggests that people give their loved ones on "GivingTuesday" charity gift cards, where the recipients in turn donate them to charities of their choice registered on CanadaHelps.org.
