The World Health Organization said it documented about 493 attacks on healthcare workers in the Palestinian territories, resulting in 500 deaths and about 700 injured since last October 7.
WHO added, during a press conference today, Thursday, that there is no hospital operating in northern Gaza after the Baptist hospital went out of service, calling for respect for international law and the entry of fuel to hospitals in the Gaza Strip to prevent the deaths of patients there.
The organization confirmed that it has seen no evidence of hospitals being used for military purposes, adding: "We emphasize the importance of reaching a humanitarian ceasefire to allow the entry of fuel and doctors to carry out surgeries and save people's lives in Gaza."
WHO also expressed concern about the "combination of disease, hunger, and lack of sanitation in the Gaza Strip," which leads to the suffering of the population from "high rates" of infectious diseases and deaths, affirming that Gaza is indeed witnessing very high rates of epidemic infectious diseases.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of the organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said in a post on the "X/Twitter" platform, "I am deeply concerned about the toxic mix of disease, hunger, lack of sanitation supplies, and sewage that the people of the Gaza Strip are currently facing."
Ghebreyesus added that hunger weakens the body's defenses and opens the door to disease, and moreover, cases of diarrhea among children under five have become 25 times more common than they were before the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas on last October 7.
Ghebreyesus pointed out that these diseases can be deadly for children suffering from malnutrition, and even more so in the absence of functioning health services, stressing the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said that hundreds of wounded are dying due to the lack of service at the Al-Shifa Complex.
In a related context, Palestinian media reported the fall of 4 martyrs, including the director of the Kerem Shalom crossing, as a result of targeting by Israeli occupation aircraft of the crossing facilities during work.
