The US Secretary of Defense calls on his Israeli counterpart to "contain the conflict in Gaza"

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant spoke again with his American counterpart Lloyd Austin amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, which governs Gaza.

According to the Pentagon statement, Austin "reaffirmed Israel's right to self-defense and again emphasized the importance of protecting civilians and providing humanitarian relief."

The statement added: "Austin stressed the necessity of containing the conflict in Gaza and avoiding regional escalation," following further exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and the Iran-backed Lebanese Hezbollah.
