The government of British Columbia used the extraordinary powers granted to it under the declaration of a state of emergency to implement travel restrictions related to tourism to areas affected by wildfires.
Prime Minister David Eby announced the order at a press conference this Saturday afternoon.
He also stated that the purpose of the order is to ensure there are enough temporary accommodations for people who are being evacuated or are participating in firefighting efforts.
Eby added that "the current situation is grim," noting that there are about 35,000 people under evacuation orders across the province and another 30,000 on standby for evacuation and may need to leave at any moment.
The Prime Minister continued: "We have an urgent need for more housing."
