Queen Margrethe II of Denmark announced that she intends to abdicate the throne to make way for her son, Crown Prince Frederik.
The queen’s announcement came during her New Year’s speech, stating that she intends to relinquish the throne on January 14, which is the fifty-second anniversary of her ascension to the throne at the age of thirty-one following the death of her father, King Frederik IX.
The Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also confirmed the decision in a press statement in which she praised the queen (83 years old) and thanked her for her lifelong dedication and tireless efforts for the kingdom.
