A large number of luxury cleaning products The Laundress have been withdrawn in Canada due to the risk of bacterial exposure where up to 11 people reported infections, according to the Canadian health authority.
The Canadian Ministry of Health also said in a notice on Thursday that the recall includes Laundress laundry detergent and household cleaning products.
The national health agency warned that "consumers should immediately stop using the recalled product and contact The Laundress company for compensation."
Also, the mentioned products may contain bacteria, including Burkholderia cepacia, which according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is a group of bacteria commonly found in soil and water and often resistant to common antibiotics. Burkholderia cepacia can also cause severe respiratory infections, especially for people with cystic fibrosis.
The products may also contain a variety of Pseudomonas, another type of bacteria commonly found in soil and water. According to the CDC, Pseudomonas aeruginosa can spread in healthcare settings through exposure to contaminated water or soil, as well as from person to person through contaminated hands, equipment, and surfaces.
Also, the Canadian Ministry of Health said: "People with weakened immune systems, underlying lung diseases who are exposed to the bacteria face a risk of serious infection that may require medical treatment. The bacteria can enter the body if inhaled, or through the eyes or skin cracks. Usually, people with healthy immune systems are not affected by the bacteria."
The Canadian Ministry of Health said The Laundress is aware of at least 11 consumers who reported Pseudomonas infections and is investigating whether there is a link between the reported illnesses and the recalled products, as nearly 230,000 products were sold in Canada and 8,000,000 other products in the United States.
