The Manitoba government says it plans to make the sale of alcoholic beverages more convenient, which the opposition says looks like privatization.
"Scott Fielding," the minister responsible for the provincial liquor and lottery corporation, says he will introduce a bill tomorrow to outline the changes. He did not reveal details in advance, but said the changes would make Manitoba more consistent with other provinces by offering more choice and convenience.
The Progressive Conservative government introduced a bill two years ago that would have opened up liquor sales in urban areas to private sector vendors.
The New Democratic opposition says they are concerned that the changes could lead to alcohol being sold in grocery stores, which could pose safety risks.
