Quebec Premier François Legault announced at a press conference on October 26 that the government will proceed with a plan to send payments ranging from $400 to $600. This comes after a round of payments reaching $500 provided by the government to Quebec residents in the spring of 2022. Legault promised during the elections to send new payments to residents by the end of 2022 if he won the elections, in order to counter the effects of inflation. Now, Legault says he aims to present the plan in the first few days of the National Assembly session, which begins on November 29. Legault also mentioned on Thursday that payments ranging from $400 to $600 will go to Quebecers earning less than $100,000. The CAQ party had previously said that 6.4 million people would benefit from this measure. According to an initial proposal, the government will provide $600 payments to people whose income is less than $50,000, while those earning between $50,000 and $100,000 will receive $400. The government has not yet specified the full eligibility criteria, but the requirements for receiving payments in the spring were that the resident be at least 18 years old on December 31, 2021, and have paid income taxes in 2021. Legault did not confirm the details of the new payment distribution on Thursday. However, it is expected to be distributed in the same way as last spring, when Revenu Québec announced automatic deposits into eligible residents' accounts using information from their 2021 tax returns.
