Fuel prices in the GTA are expected to rise to another record level over the weekend, with the busy tourism season approaching.
Roger MacKnight, senior petroleum analyst at En-Pro, says that the price at the pumps is expected to increase by four cents per liter on Saturday at most GTA stations to reach a new record level of $2.159.
Earlier this month, the price of a liter of regular gasoline recorded a record of $2.149 per liter. Since then, it has slightly decreased to $2.119, where it currently stands.
Since the beginning of the month, the price of gasoline has risen by 16 cents, surpassing the previous high of $2.09 per liter last month.
The average price in the GTA was about $1.30 per liter a year ago. Experts believe that rising oil prices will lead to increased costs as crude oil prices have risen by about 60 percent over the year, with much of the jump attributed to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
As prices continue to rise, all eyes are on the provincial government to fulfill Premier Doug Ford’s promise to temporarily reduce the fuel tax by 5.7 cents per liter for six months starting July 1.
