A government source said that the Canadian government has received assurances that there will be windows to evacuate Canadian citizens from Gaza via the Rafah border crossing on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.
The source, who is directly involved in efforts to evacuate Canadians, warned that the situation is fluid and that unforeseen events could affect the timelines for getting Canadians out of Gaza.
The Canadian Global Affairs organization also said it is in contact with at least 499 Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and their family members trapped in the besieged enclave for nearly a month.
Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly tweeted Thursday evening that she had received assurances from the Israeli Foreign Minister that Canadians and their families will be able to leave Gaza in the coming days. She added that the Egyptian Foreign Minister confirmed his country's cooperation in efforts to evacuate Canadians stranded in Gaza.
Similarly, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters in Washington, D.C. on Friday in French that it is clear the situation is very complicated.
Trudeau added that the government hopes to allow Canadians to cross into Egypt in the coming days.
The news of a possible allowance for Canadians to leave Gaza starting Sunday comes amid growing frustration over the Canadian government's lack of success so far on this issue.
For the first time since the conflict between Israel and Hamas began, hundreds of foreign nationals have obtained approval to leave Gaza this week as a result of ongoing negotiations between Egypt, Israel, and Hamas. Qatar is mediating these negotiations.
The Gaza border authority, run by Hamas, also published lists on Thursday and Friday of foreign nationals from more than a dozen countries approved to leave via the Rafah border crossing.
Citizens from Group of Seven allies, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy, prepared these lists, but no Canadian has been approved yet.
