The British scientific journal Nature released its annual report that examines how various research centers measure up when it comes to their work in the field of sciences.
For 2023, the University of Toronto performed better compared to other universities in the country and many educational institutions around the world.
When it comes to all natural and health sciences, the top university in Toronto ranked 19th in terms of research output, with other Canadian institutions (McGill) ranking 64th, and the University of (UBC) at 70th.
Specifically for health sciences, the University of Toronto improved its ranking and came in second among 100 universities, after Harvard University and ahead of Johns Hopkins University, the University of California San Francisco, and the University of Michigan.
It is noted that the United States spends on health science research (17% of its GDP) significantly more compared to Canada (11% of its considerably lower GDP).
It is worth mentioning that this ranking is based on scientific articles published in the previous year, examining the number of articles that came from each institution and the share of students or staff from each school who were listed as authors.
The Vice President of Research, Innovation, and Strategic Initiatives at the University of Toronto stated to Nature Magazine that the institution's collaboration with 14 hospitals in the Toronto academic health sciences network, along with teamwork across disciplines, was the basis for its research achievements last year.
Looking at other fields measured, the University of Toronto was ranked 14th for its studies in biological sciences, 31st for earth and environmental sciences, 34th for natural sciences, 56th for nature and sciences, 66th in chemistry, and 80th in physical sciences.
Meanwhile, Canada ranked seventh thanks to its output of scientific articles in 2022, after the United States, China, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, and France.
