Firefighters in Ottawa quickly extinguished a fire that broke out at a car dealership in the southern part of the city yesterday afternoon, Tuesday.

Thick flames and heavy black smoke could be seen coming from Mack Street south of Hunt Club Road.

Nick DeFazio, a spokesperson for Ottawa Fire Services, said that several people called 9-1-1 around 2:18 PM.

He told the media, "There was a car on fire, and the flames spread to several vehicles, and a 45-foot trailer filled with tires also caught fire."  "The firefighters did a great job containing the fire in less than an hour. It was brought under control just before 3 o'clock."

The firefighting teams protected the neighboring building, preventing flames from igniting it.  The hazardous materials team set up a decontamination line to clean the personal protective equipment of the firefighting crews due to the high level of hydrocarbons and carcinogenic materials resulting from the fire, and no injuries have been reported.

DeFazio stated that several power lines fell, posing hazards for firefighters at the scene.  The nature of the fire also required some additional precautions.
